For eons, eyes watched the heavens above, wondering if there was life beyond their own world...
One night not far past, that question was answered... Far beyond the ken of mortals and perhaps even the fickle gods they love to worship, in a distant constellation whose ancient light had long shined upon the world, curious eyes watched them and wondered why......
"Why do they spend their days so furiously, always in a hurry to do things?" "Why must so much of their time be spent in conflict?" Why are they so centered upon their own small world, when the universe is so much larger?" "Why--"
"ENOUGH!!" Said an ancient star. "Always do we watch, quietly and without end. Our contribution to be the lighting of the night's sky, to guide those wise enough to know. Our purpose...simply to be!"
"While that is so." Said another ancient, "This one is but newly borne. Young even as a few of those he watches consider things. His is but a natural curiousity unknown now to we who have always been." The young one sat quietly, heavenly light dim from the scolding of the first ancient. "Let me speak with him and remind him of a time when all was new, when he himself was but a young star." The second ancient told the young one. Patiently, the young one waited, watching as those far away grew old and perished. But, as he watched with astonishment, new ones took their place, thriving, maturing, and in turn, growing old and perishing as well, before his own eyes had so much as blinked. Finally, the two ancient stars returned and cast their decision. "I've decided that there is only one way that you may sate your knowledge of why", spoke the first ancient. "So that you may learn and gain experience, it is your fate that you now descend to those there, to those who fascinate you so greatly." The young star paused for a moment, heart pounding in sudden realization.
"I, am able to go and see THEM, for myself?"
He asked, eyes brightening once more. Without a year's hesitation, the young one flew off, leaving the ancients in his fiery path. "I will worry greatly for him.", said the second ancient. "Do not do so.", said the first with a gruff voice. "He will have to learn on his own. As always, we will simply watch..."
